Absztrakt (kivonat)

The aim of this paper is to assess whether OTP Bank is able to create a sustained competitive advantage by transferring capabilities and resources between the parent bank and its subsidiaries among cross-border acquisitions. OTP Bank has acquired several foreign banks over the past two decades to achieve further growth in the CEE region. The hypothesis of the work is that OTP can increase its competitiveness by having the dynamic capability to make successful acquisitions and integrations. The research has been divided into different parts. In this work it was concluded that OTP has valuable resources and capabilities. The capability has been assessed to transfer these valuable resources and capabilities to the acquired banks during the integration and post-merge transformation process. To the extent that OTP was able to transfer them, it was examined whether they could be used to increase the competitiveness of the subsidiary banks in their local markets. In this work, the impact of the better market position of the subsidiary banks on the market performance of the OTP Group was analysed. Mixed method was selected as research methodology. In the qualitative part, perception-based interviews were conducted with managers of the Hungarian parent company and top managers of foreign subsidiaries. In the quantitative research, questionnaire survey was done with top managers to assess the transferred capabilities and resources and their impact on their competitiveness. The competitiveness was measured using a firm-level competitiveness index based on the resource-based theory, while validated and widely used research questions were used to understand the transferred capabilities and resources.
