Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse the current situation of Roma representation in Hungary. And to examine the role of education of political awareness in representation. Critical thinking and empowerment are prominent in the discussion which guides the thesis, in particular Gramsci’s notion of organic intellectuals and bottom up mobilisation (referred to the thesis as grassroots activism) who act as catalysts in practicing democracy and mobilising communities. The main source of date are qualitative and in-depth interviews with experienced activists, experts and community members. After discussing the main elements of influencing factors on activism such as, education, NGOs, Hungarian and EU policies, throughout different perspectives and experiences of Roma activist, politicians, academics and simple working-class respondents. In the conclusion the study offers a solution which promotes an international unity and advocacy.
