Abstract

As one of the four heroines of ancient Chinese legend, Mulan is a woman of unique values and a charismatic personality. Mulan's story has been reinterpreted in many artworks from East and West in recent years. The author has selected three representative texts from different cultural contexts: the folk song Mulan, the modern Chinese film Mulan (2009), and the Disney live-action film Mulan (2020). Through the study of Mulan's image in these three cross-cultural texts, the cultural roots behind the evolution of Mulan's image and the exchange and integration of Eastern and Western cultures in the context of globalization are explored in depth. The folk song Mulan and the modern Chinese film Mulan are based on an Eastern perspective. They portray a beautiful image of the traditional Chinese woman Mulan as kind and brave, but there are differences between the two as time goes on. Disney's live-action version of Mulan is a new interpretation of the image of Mulan based on a Western perspective. It is also the first version of Mulan in history to embed a feminist view and the journey of female awakening. At the same time, this thesis uses Disney's live-action version of Mulan as a case study. Through quantitative research, it explores the film's successes and shortcomings in cross-cultural communication, examines the integration and conflict between Eastern and Western cultures in globalization, and offers new ideas for cross-cultural communication between Eastern and Western cultures.
