This thesis examines the diversity of experiences that males and females have while and after consuming alcohol and if these differences are present due to the traditional gender roles and expectations. Several sociological approaches to gender and feminism are summarized, as well as diverse research on the topic of alcohol and alcohol consumption among the genders. The thesis focuses mainly on the region of Central and Eastern Europe, but there is a representation of global findings as well. Due to the historical specificity of the target region, there is a brief presentation of the history of socialism and women’s position during the period. Moreover, a big proportion of the thesis takes into account the results of one of the most fundamental pieces of research on the topic of across countries gender drinking differences or similarity - the GENACIS study. Evidence was gathered through twelve individual interviews with young adults from the region of Central and Eastern Europe and also through a quantitative survey that examined the point of view of individuals from all around the globe. The main findings are that both males and females feel judged by the society while and after consuming too much alcohol. Still, there is a difference in regards to the quantity of alcohol that the two genders consume, where women often feel victimized for consuming even a small amount of alcohol.
