Abstract
In my thesis, I analyze the effect that the demographic processes have on economic competitiveness. In this paper, I give an overview on the development of economic competitiveness from the 1970s until now, during which it becomes clear that improving competitiveness not only requires a relevant economic policy, but also a complex social policy strategy. A key element of the social policy is the demographic policy. Following my examination of the international situation, I test the following hypothesis with a time series regression model: the effect of bad health conditions of the population, the fertility rate growth, the increase of the effective retirement age of women, and the expansion of part-time employment and full employment on productivity. Given the result of the analyses, I accept all of the hypothesis. It is also import to note that in addition to the various policy measures, there is a need for a complex and flexible population policy strategy which can be adapted to the circumstances.
