Abstract

This thesis will focus on the trilateral peacekeeping operation working in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova. It will analyse the evolution of the mission in the context of the last 27 years, the legal basis for its establishment, but also evaluate its compliance to the international peacekeeping standards. By researching the current stage of the Transnistrian conflict and considering the public stances of the involved parties, this thesis reviews the viability of the peacekeeping mission on the Nistru river. The UN Peacekeeping Principles will serve as a basis for evaluating the peacekeeping mission from a legal point of view, the data on the work of the mission will help at weighing its effectiveness. Although there is no formal mandate on which to judge the effectiveness of the mission, it is fair to state that this peacekeeping mission operates in severe violation of basic principles of peacekeeping and does not fulfill some of its basic demilitarization tasks.
